[00:00:00 - 00:00:07] Terence McKenna, I describe him, I ask a number of people and they look puzzled and [00:00:07 - 00:00:12] loped off. Finally I managed to get a consensus which is this, that Terence is an expert in [00:00:12 - 00:00:17] Amazonian shamanism, a philosopher and an explorer of altered states, the sort of thing we all [00:00:17 - 00:00:23] do when we get home from an evening. So but I think he does it rather better than most. [00:00:23 - 00:00:30] Terence McKenna, please welcome Terence. Well I'm aware of how late in the day it is and [00:00:30 - 00:00:45] I know some of you must be double parked so I'll make this as succinct as possible. This [00:00:48 - 00:00:55] morning's discussion caused me to wonder how much we would understand about electricity [00:00:55 - 00:01:01] if our method of studying it was to stand on the tops of high hills and wait to be struck [00:01:01 - 00:01:08] by lightning. It seems to me that's sort of the position that we're in vis-a-vis the UFOs. [00:01:11 - 00:01:18] We have no real theory, we have conjectures, we have fiercely defended hypotheses but we [00:01:18 - 00:01:28] have very little that is concrete to go on. It's almost as though the issue of the UFO [00:01:28 - 00:01:36] were an onion and as we peel the layers of the onion we discover when we get to the center [00:01:37 - 00:01:44] that there is nothing there whatsoever left. It reminds me that if you cross an onion with [00:01:44 - 00:01:53] a UFO what you get is a flying saucer that brings tears to your eyes. And so what I would [00:01:53 - 00:02:05] like to do is just based on the notes I took today to review what the options are for the [00:02:06 - 00:02:13] UFOs in terms of trying to get some kind of intellectual handle on this phenomenon and [00:02:13 - 00:02:22] I'll move through them rather quickly. One possibility that I suppose is now out of fashion [00:02:22 - 00:02:29] because it wasn't mentioned here today other than what Jacques said about ball lightning [00:02:29 - 00:02:36] and plasmas is that the UFOs are somehow natural phenomena, perhaps piezoelectric forces that [00:02:36 - 00:02:45] have an ability to interact with the delicate electrochemical machinery of the human nervous [00:02:45 - 00:02:52] system to create an impression of hallucination or visitation or abduction. That's one possibility. [00:02:56 - 00:03:03] The more serious contenders as explanations I think fall into three categories. Is it [00:03:03 - 00:03:12] us? Are we being visited? Or is there another tenant in the building that we are unaware [00:03:12 - 00:03:19] of? And my own feeling about this tends to vacillate. I have had contact experiences. [00:03:25 - 00:03:32] I have seen a UFO very close. I have met with entities from other dimensions and it has [00:03:32 - 00:03:42] not impelled me to take a strong position. I paid very close attention when these experiences [00:03:42 - 00:03:51] were happening to me and there always seem to be loose ends that argue against whatever [00:03:53 - 00:04:00] hypothesis seems currently most attractive. And though Jacques didn't mention it today, [00:04:00 - 00:04:07] I recall in his book, The Invisible College, he stressed the absurdity that seems to attend [00:04:07 - 00:04:15] the contact experience. That if the contactee will truly tell the unvarnished truth, then [00:04:18 - 00:04:24] there will be elements in the story which will make the contactee look like a moron. [00:04:24 - 00:04:31] In other words, the invalidation of the experience is an inimical part of its structure, almost [00:04:31 - 00:04:38] as though the entities were saying, "Well, you may tell this story if you wish, but if [00:04:38 - 00:04:45] you tell it truthfully, you'll be taken for a fool." Well, there's nothing wrong with [00:04:45 - 00:04:52] being taken for a fool, except that it does feel the phenomenon rather nicely away from [00:04:52 - 00:04:58] the very sober ladies and gentlemen who are making their careers in some branch of science. [00:04:58 - 00:05:05] They are not interested in investigating the kinky, the anecdotal, the possibly pathological. [00:05:09 - 00:05:15] In preparation for this conference, I reread Carl Jung's book published in 1954 called [00:05:15 - 00:05:21] Flying Saucers, A Modern Myth of Things Seen in the Sky. And to my mind, no one has really [00:05:21 - 00:05:28] gone beyond Jung. He understood very clearly that saying that something is a denizen of [00:05:28 - 00:05:38] the psychic realm no way precludes it also having efficacious force in the physical world. [00:05:38 - 00:05:45] Some of the points which Jung made today about the nature of the medical examinations that [00:05:45 - 00:05:57] are reported, they are absurd. They are unnecessary to be performed at our level of technology, [00:05:57 - 00:06:04] let alone any future more advanced level that we might be asked to believe in. So if the [00:06:06 - 00:06:13] UFO phenomenon is something that is coming from us, then what is it and what is it for? [00:06:13 - 00:06:20] And I've given a good deal of thought to this question over the years because I tend to [00:06:20 - 00:06:27] lean toward the notion that the UFO problem, like many subtle problems, is haunted by our [00:06:30 - 00:06:37] own naivete concerning language. If I were to randomly choose, and don't worry, I shan't, [00:06:37 - 00:06:45] five of you to come up here and each one of you would have 40 seconds to explain to the [00:06:45 - 00:06:52] rest of us what an atom is, it would be preposterous. None of us know. I doubt there's a person [00:06:54 - 00:07:01] in this room who can give an account of the atom that tallies with the quote unquote orthodox [00:07:01 - 00:07:08] description of the atom. So there is a curious fuzziness about the most mundane parts of [00:07:08 - 00:07:18] reality when we really attempt to magnify and understand them in the clear light of [00:07:18 - 00:07:25] consciousness how much more ambiguity there is than naturally attendant upon the examination [00:07:25 - 00:07:34] of any kind of phenomenon which are rare or tend to be fringy. So it isn't a matter of [00:07:34 - 00:07:43] achieving consensus over the UFO. We can't even achieve consensus about what constitutes [00:07:43 - 00:07:50] a decent souffle. So this passionate desire to drag us all under the umbrella of a single [00:07:50 - 00:07:59] explanation is I think missing the point. To my mind, if the UFO phenomenon is something [00:07:59 - 00:08:09] arising out of the superego of the human psychic organization, then we should ask why. What [00:08:12 - 00:08:19] is it doing? And I don't want to sound like a public relations agent for Jacques Vallée, [00:08:19 - 00:08:26] but to my mind with the exception of Jung, Jacques is the only commentator on the phenomenon [00:08:26 - 00:08:34] who has really pushed the frontier back. To my mind in the Invisible College when Vallée [00:08:34 - 00:08:41] says in looking at the effect, not asking the question what is it, but what does it [00:08:41 - 00:08:48] mean? You very quickly see what the flying saucers are doing. What they are doing is [00:08:48 - 00:08:55] eroding faith in science. They are an antidote to the scientific paradigm that has evolved [00:08:55 - 00:09:05] over the past 400 years and which has led us to the brink of global catastrophe. So [00:09:06 - 00:09:13] the notion being developed here is that within the structure of the human psyche there is [00:09:13 - 00:09:25] something like a governor, something like a monitoring circuit which when a society [00:09:25 - 00:09:33] begins to evolve in a pathological or lethal direction, phenomena can be induced to a more [00:09:34 - 00:09:40] radical level. Not by the egos of men and women, not by their institutions, but by the [00:09:40 - 00:09:47] over mind, the collectivity of the human species. Phenomena can be induced which are so corrosive [00:09:47 - 00:09:56] to the ideologies currently in place that their underpinnings are cut away, their validity [00:09:56 - 00:10:03] is called into question and their programs for social development and control are invalidated [00:10:03 - 00:10:10] and destroyed. Now a perfect example of this is the rise of infant Christianity. If you [00:10:10 - 00:10:17] cast your mind back to the situation in the early years of the Christian era and imagine [00:10:17 - 00:10:26] the mentality of a Roman aristocrat, a person of power in Roman society, there is a very [00:10:26 - 00:10:33] complex relationship between the Christian and the Roman aristocrats. The Christian aristocrats [00:10:33 - 00:10:40] are the most powerful and the most powerful in the world. The Christian aristocrats are [00:10:40 - 00:10:47] the most powerful in the world. The Christian aristocrats are the most powerful in the world. [00:10:47 - 00:10:55] The Christian aristocrats are the most powerful in the world. The Christian aristocrats are [00:10:55 - 00:11:02] triumphed over death and risen after three days in the tomb. Should the master of a Roman [00:11:02 - 00:11:09] household have caught wind of this kind of superstitious talk among the hell, he would [00:11:09 - 00:11:16] have just dismissed it with a sneer. What a preposterous idea. And it is a preposterous [00:11:16 - 00:11:23] idea. Nevertheless, the fact that an idea is preposterous has never held it back from [00:11:23 - 00:11:30] making zealous converts. And within 120 years after the annunciation of the birth of Christianity, [00:11:30 - 00:11:38] its missionaries were beating on the gates of Rome attempting to convert the emperor. [00:11:38 - 00:11:45] Now I see a similar situation in the modern context that rationalism, scientific technology, [00:11:48 - 00:11:55] which began and came out of the scholasticism of the Middle Ages and the quite legitimate [00:11:55 - 00:12:04] wish to glorify God through an appreciation of his natural world, turned into a kind of [00:12:04 - 00:12:12] demonic past, a kind of descent into the underworld, a nekaia, if you will, leading to the present [00:12:15 - 00:12:21] cultural and political impasse that involved massive stockpiles of atomic weapons, huge [00:12:21 - 00:12:28] propagandized populations cut off from any knowledge of their real histories, male-dominated [00:12:28 - 00:12:36] organizations plying their message of lethal destruction and inevitable historical advance. [00:12:38 - 00:12:45] And into this situation comes suddenly an anomaly, something which cannot be explained. [00:12:45 - 00:12:53] I believe that that is the purpose of the UFO, to inject uncertainty into the male-dominated [00:12:53 - 00:13:02] paternalistic rational solar myth under which we are suffering. [00:13:08 - 00:13:12] So I suppose if you had to categorize this point of view, you would say I'm taking a [00:13:12 - 00:13:19] death psychological, psychoanalytic point of view. What I'm saying is that the UFO is [00:13:19 - 00:13:27] nothing more than an assertion of herself by the goddess into history, saying to science [00:13:31 - 00:13:38] and paternalistically governed and driven organizations, you have gone far enough. We [00:13:38 - 00:13:45] are going to turn the world upside down. Your science is going to be shown up for what it [00:13:45 - 00:13:52] is, nothing more than a pleasant metaphor usefully extrapolated into the production [00:13:52 - 00:13:59] of toys for healthy children. That's what science is good for. It is not some meta-theory [00:14:00 - 00:14:07] at whose feet every point of view from astrology to acupressure to channeling need be laid [00:14:07 - 00:14:14] to have the hand of science announce thumbs up or thumbs down. [00:14:14 - 00:14:25] Now there is another possibility which can be dovetailed into the first. It is that it [00:14:27 - 00:14:34] is not so much the oversold or the super ego of the human species which is responsible [00:14:34 - 00:14:41] for stopping scientific masculine paternalism in its tracks, but rather that unbeknownst [00:14:41 - 00:14:49] to self-absorbed and myopic human beings, we have always shared or at least for a very [00:14:49 - 00:14:56] long period of time have shared this planet with another, another intelligent species [00:14:57 - 00:15:04] another entity which may have been perfectly content to allow us to abide in our ignorance [00:15:04 - 00:15:12] of its presence until the point where it came to its awareness that our style was toxifying, [00:15:12 - 00:15:22] ruining, raping and perverting the planet. And at that point this thing springs into [00:15:23 - 00:15:30] action with similar end results as the previous scenario, the invocation of the super ego. [00:15:30 - 00:15:39] It's astonishing to me that in the 45 years that the UFO are we being visited question [00:15:39 - 00:15:46] has been kicked around, I have never seen in any UFO book or publication the suggestion [00:15:46 - 00:15:53] made that if we believe we are being visited by organic intelligent life forms from some [00:15:53 - 00:16:01] other dimension or place in the galaxy then we should very, very thoroughly examine the [00:16:01 - 00:16:08] ecology of this planet for traces of its presence. What assurance do we have that the several [00:16:09 - 00:16:16] million life forms that we know to exist on this planet all evolved here? Do we have any [00:16:16 - 00:16:23] assurance? There are ways to gain that assurance by doing comparative DNA sequencing and this [00:16:23 - 00:16:31] sort of thing. Some of you may know my own position or one of my positions which is that [00:16:34 - 00:16:41] plants and fungi containing psychoactive compounds are extremely viable candidates for extraterrestrial [00:16:41 - 00:16:50] intruders into the environment of this planet. And this is not to put down Whitley's story [00:16:50 - 00:16:57] which is a very interesting story but had he prefaced his story with the comment that [00:16:57 - 00:17:02] before it all happened he took 5 grams of mushrooms I doubt he could have sold it to [00:17:02 - 00:17:09] his mother because in the world where mushrooms and other psychedelic plants are imbibed such [00:17:09 - 00:17:17] stories are common place, no big deal. So I am always amused by UFO investigators and [00:17:17 - 00:17:26] compilers of data who will tell you well the first thing we did is we got rid of all the [00:17:26 - 00:17:33] stories told by anybody who was intoxicated on anything. It seems to me that move has [00:17:33 - 00:17:40] probably absolutely precluded any possibility of understanding what is going on. You see [00:17:40 - 00:17:52] culture is something that we wear like clothes and we are very much at ease with culture. [00:17:53 - 00:17:59] Our mind is very much at ease with culture and we gather the language of a given culture [00:17:59 - 00:18:06] around us. Culture is the mind unperturbed. When a shaman or an ecstatic visionary goes [00:18:06 - 00:18:16] into the wilderness and through ordeal or yogic practice or breath control or the taking [00:18:16 - 00:18:23] of a psychoactive substance perturbs the mind then we see what the mind is out naked undressed [00:18:23 - 00:18:33] from the clothing of language and convention. That's why I have made this point over and [00:18:33 - 00:18:40] over again. There cannot, there will not be a serious discussion of the origin of UFOs [00:18:43 - 00:18:50] or for that matter of the nature of consciousness itself until we leave the utterly culture [00:18:50 - 00:18:57] bound provincial and hick like attitude that science has foisted on us about perturbing [00:18:57 - 00:19:05] the mind. Without the use of psychedelic substances I think solving the UFO dilemma is going to [00:19:05 - 00:19:11] be as thankless a task as attempting to understand the nature of the universe without availing [00:19:11 - 00:19:18] yourself of the use of a telescope. It is simply tying our hands behind our backs. [00:19:18 - 00:19:27] Now there is a third possibility which is the one that is the more commonly entertained [00:19:27 - 00:19:35] notion which is simply that we are being observed by intelligent life forms that evolved somewhere [00:19:35 - 00:19:42] else in the galaxy. They have quarantined our planet to keep us from being agitated [00:19:42 - 00:19:49] by their presence and they will eventually reveal themselves. I find this an extremely [00:19:49 - 00:19:58] odious notion especially the part about how much chaos there will be if the truth is ever [00:20:00 - 00:20:06] revealed. This is nothing more than the reassertion of masculine paternalism, its right to keep [00:20:06 - 00:20:13] secrets from the rest of us, its belief that there is a privileged all male class of people [00:20:13 - 00:20:20] who can be let in on what's really going on and the rest of us poor dears have to be shielded [00:20:20 - 00:20:28] from these tremendously shocking facts. I discussed this once with an entity and it [00:20:28 - 00:20:35] said to me well you know we've disguised ourselves as an extraterrestrial invasion so as to not [00:20:35 - 00:20:43] alarm people with what's really going on. We're getting close to the end folks. There [00:20:43 - 00:20:53] is a fourth possibility which I mention only in the interest of thoroughness which is that [00:20:54 - 00:21:00] these entities and their vehicles are not spacecraft at all but are in some sense time [00:21:00 - 00:21:07] craft and that we may be the tremendous sense of empathy with these quite physically unusual [00:21:07 - 00:21:14] beings may arise out of the fact that we're looking into the faces of our great great [00:21:14 - 00:21:21] great grandchildren who may be emanating back through time carrying the message, a message [00:21:23 - 00:21:30] about some sort of future event or situation that lies many centuries downstream from us [00:21:30 - 00:21:38] but that is of such import that from that point agents are moving backward and possibly [00:21:38 - 00:21:46] forward through time spreading the news of some kind of mode shift. This doesn't seem [00:21:46 - 00:21:53] to me to be impossible. However based on my own experience I've been able to see that [00:21:53 - 00:21:58] experience which is what I think this thing really comes down to because what we have [00:21:58 - 00:22:05] in the UFO issue is an official position supported by scientists whether they be Neanderthal [00:22:05 - 00:22:12] right wingers or doctrinaire Marxists or whatever a conspiracy of consensus against the personal [00:22:12 - 00:22:22] experiences of individual human beings who are told well what you're saying happened [00:22:22 - 00:22:29] to you can't have happened you are insane you are mentally ill you are mistaken so what [00:22:29 - 00:22:37] we really have here is a political issue which do you believe your perceptions memories and [00:22:37 - 00:22:47] expectations aided by your intellect or some kind of utterly abstract official doctrinaire [00:22:49 - 00:22:56] sexist philosophy laid on from above so I think really what the saucers do if you accept [00:22:56 - 00:23:05] their presence is they empower us they empower us to see science for the shell game that [00:23:05 - 00:23:12] it is to see the past 400 years of western culture for the pathetic narrowing of the [00:23:15 - 00:23:21] spectrum of allowable phenomena that it is to the point where people think that if you [00:23:21 - 00:23:28] can't bang on something with a hammer it isn't real which to me is just wild talk I [00:23:28 - 00:23:36] can't even imagine where that kind of thing is coming from so I think and I'll just leave [00:23:36 - 00:23:43] you with this final thought that in lieu of the repression and it is a repression throughout [00:23:45 - 00:23:52] this century of legitimately available ways of exploring the modalities of consciousness [00:23:52 - 00:24:01] and by that I mean psychoactive compounds the repression of those compounds and their [00:24:01 - 00:24:10] use by science has created a neurotic energy dynamic in the math psyche and the math psyche [00:24:12 - 00:24:19] has begun to hallucinate because the destiny of human beings is to live in the imagination [00:24:19 - 00:24:33] in the hands of the goddess and wherever that thrust is impeded psychopathy will result [00:24:36 - 00:24:43] there will be neurosis there will be psychics epidemic there will be confusion so I believe [00:24:43 - 00:24:50] that until we form a resolution to conduct an unfettered and mature exploration of the [00:24:50 - 00:25:00] human psychology using all the tools available to us that the skies of earth will continue [00:25:01 - 00:25:08] to be haunted by flying saucers they will continue to be haunted by flying saucers and [00:25:08 - 00:25:15] their denizens because they are symbols of our infantilism of our sense of loss of our [00:25:15 - 00:25:27] incompleteness and we can heal that breach by simply recognizing that the true mystery [00:25:29 - 00:25:36] lies within us the true mystery is in the mind and its historical promise is the transformation [00:25:36 - 00:25:44] of our society through the abandonment of reason as it has been narrowly defined by [00:25:44 - 00:25:51] this extremely solar masculine paternalistic materialistic legacy that we are the victims [00:25:53 - 00:26:00] of well I could talk for a long time but I think that's it in a nutshell thank you thank [00:26:00 - 00:26:07] you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank [00:26:07 -
